Gannet Safaris

Prize: Private Range Rover Sunrise tour for 2 people

Gannet Safaris Overland offers tours to the spectacular Cape Kidnappers gannet colony – the Australasian Gannet – the Takapu, is a member of the Booby family.   It’s the largest accessible mainland colony in the world.

Tours are 3 hours as we drive overland through the private farmland of Cape Kidnappers Station, travelling above the cliffs stopping several times at lookout points with 360 degree views over all of Hawkes Bay – from the Mahia peninsular back over to Mt Rupehau, down to the beach and the cliffs of the cape.

While at the plateau you are within a few metres of the remarkable gannets, they are fascinating birds to watch with their stunning golden crowns.  See them perform their mating ritual through to them building their nests, hatching of the chicks and towards the end of the season, witnessing the juvenile take off on their maiden flight.

Gannet Safaris Overland is Hawkes Bays most iconic tour and a must do on everyone’s bucket list when here and has been guiding visitors to the cape for over 50 years.

All our driver/guides are enormously knowledge on the area, birds, farm and local history.  While at the plateau we serve tea/coffee or for our sunrise tours a gourmet breakfast.

Gannet Safaris is pleased to sponsor the Virtual Race of NZ with 2 private tours (available during the season of 1st September to 30th April)
