Weta Workshop Unleashed is a wildly imaginative and immersive experience that invites guests of all ages into a fantastical film effects facility, created, designed and built by Wellington’s Academy Award-winning Weta Workshop.
Weta Workshop Unleashed complements Weta Workshop’s existing Wellington-based movie effects tours and experiences by showcasing their skills as conceptual designers and storytellers in a brand-new way.
From the curious to the creative, family-friendly to thrill seekers, there’s something for everyone. Join Unleashed Crew on a 90-minute guided journey through three original movie projects: a creature feature, sci-fi adventure and fantasy epic. Discover the magic of film making from conceptual design to creature sculpting, weapons making to world building, special effects makeup to massive miniatures, and everything in between. Our guests can also have a go at creating something themselves at one of our maker tables.
For over 25 years Weta Workshop has applied its craftsmanship to blockbuster films including The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, Avatar, Blade Runner 2049, and most recently, Mulan. The Academy Award®-winning design and physical effects facility is also an international tourist destination, producer of collectibles, behind-the-scenes and media production facility, and creator of public sculptures and immersive exhibition experiences like the record-breaking Gallipoli: The scale of our war, at New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa. From humble beginnings in the back room of their flat, co-founders Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger have built Weta Workshop into what it is today.
