Waimangu Volcanic Valley is the world’s youngest geothermal valley, created by the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886.
Rich in history and stories, the area is the birthplace of tourism in New Zealand. Early visitors would travel to the Tarawera area to see and bathe in the hot mineral spring waters of the Pink and White Terraces, considered to be the 8th Natural Wonder of the World until they were buried in the eruption.
Now, walking and hiking trails weave through regenerating native New Zealand bush and spectacular geothermal sights like Frying Pan Lake, the world’s largest hot spring, and the mysterious blue Inferno Crater Lake. The trail continues through wetlands thriving with birdlife, down to Lake Rotomahana.
A 45minute boat cruise on Lake Rotomahana is a great way to experience the unique environment of the lake, wonder at the lakeside steaming cliffs, geysers and geothermal features and cruise over the final resting place of the Pink and White Terraces. Then return to the top of the valley on a free
internal shuttle bus.
