Waitangi Treaty Grounds

Prize: Experience Passes

Waitangi welcomes you on a journey of discovery through Aotearoa New Zealand’s most important historic site. Explore the two new contemporary museums, Te Rau Aroha museum, Te Kōngahu Museum of Waitangi, the interactive carving studio, the Treaty House, Te Whare Rūnanga (carved Meeting House), the world’s largest ceremonial war canoe and enjoy a full programme of tours and cultural performances.

Te Kōngahu Museum of Waitangi holds a stunning collection of stories and taonga (treasured objects) which bring to life the history of Waitangi. It presents the events leading up to, during, and after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in a balanced and authentic way, explaining the motivations and views of all sides equally.

Te Rau Aroha museum was opened in 2020 and commemorates the service and sacrifice of Māori in the NZ Armed Forces, sharing stories of heroism, loss and restoration from the world wars and subsequent conflicts.

Visitors to Waitangi Treaty Grounds purchase an Experience Pass which includes a guided tour of the grounds (50 minutes), a Māori cultural performance (30 minutes), entry to the two museums, the Treaty House, the carved Meeting House, the carving studio and the world’s largest ceremonial war canoe. The Experience pass is valid for two days.

Hāngi and concert evenings are scheduled during the summer months – an intimate cultural experience not to be missed.
